Hamdorf Café

AHH has supported NDIS participants for over seven years through hospitality and barista training, building confidence and real-world employment skills.

Starting with the Miss Sunshine Coffee Cart, AHH expanded in October 2025 with the opening of Hamdorf Café, a unique, inclusive space featuring a miniature Guinea Pig Village.

The café provides hands-on experience in customer service, tourism, and hospitality through programs like the Hamdorf Café Job Skills Program, creating meaningful pathways to employment.

Hospitality Job Skills Program
Our Hamdorf Café Job Skills Program is designed to support you in building real-world hospitality skills in a welcoming, supportive café environment.
With personalised guidance and hands-on experience, we help you grow your confidence, independence, and readiness for employment.
Program Overview
  • Getting started: Make an enquiry via phone, email, or our website
  • Onboarding: We’ll guide you through documentation, confirm funding, and match you with a dedicated mentor
  • Program length: 3 months
  • Training focus: Practical hospitality and café skills in a real café setting
  • Support: 1:1 support with a support worker for a minimum 4-hour shift each week
  • End-of-program review: Reflect on your progress and plan your next steps
What You’ll Learn
During your time in the café, you’ll be supported to develop a range of practical skills, including:

  • Clearing and cleaning tables
  • Washing dishes
  • Serving customers and using a POS system
  • Preparing and serving food
  • Making barista coffees and other drinks
How the Program Works

Each participant joins the program for an initial three-month period. During this time:

  • You’ll receive personalised, one-on-one support
  • Skills are developed gradually, based on your confidence and ability
  • The focus is on building independence and workplace readiness

This structured timeframe provides a clear goal, allows time to build and assess your skills, and ensures we can offer high-quality, individualised support to every participant.

What Happens Next?
At the end of the program, we’ll sit down with you to review your progress and talk about your next steps. These may include:

  • Support into employment pathways
  • Referral to Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA)
  • Help finding open employment, including:
    • Résumé writing
    • Job applications
    • Interview preparation
  • Extending your time in the program (subject to availability)

We’re here to support you every step of the way as you move toward your goals.

8-Week Barista training
Our 8-week Barista training can be completed as a stand-alone course or as part of our Job Skills Training Program.

Delivered through a third-party registered training provider, the course combines 8-weeks of online learning and an in-person exam at the end of your course to test your practical skills.

Our AHH team will help you get enrolled and set up, and support you throughout your journey. During the 8-weeks, you’ll also spend at least 4 hours in our café alongside a support worker, building practical barista skills and getting help with your coursework if needed. The goal is to help you feel confident, capable, and ready for your exam. AHH can also support you to attend your exam.

Guinea Pig Village
The Hamdorf Guinea Pig Village is a miniature version of Hahndorf where our guinea pigs get to hangout for the day, eating lots of snacks and drinking at the ‘German Arms’. The miniature village was created by our Day Options clients, under the guidance of our Day Options team leader and artist, Tania.

The miniature village is open to the public, where customers enter the village and get to hold and pet the guinea pigs.

The village is open 7 days a week, with opportunities for our participants to be supported to build employment skills in the village.

A day in the Miniature Guinea Pig Village includes:

  • Ensuring the village is clean and ready for the day
  • Getting the guinea pigs settled in, making sure they have food and water
  • Greeting customers as they come, telling the about the village and how it was made
  • Assisting customers with holding the Guinea Pigs
  • Ensuring the welfare of the guinea pigs throughout the shift
  • Clean-up at the end of the day

Spots are limited and fill-up fast, so be sure to contact us to check availability.
